How Are Shipping Containers Made?
October 5, 2024 · Eveon Containers
Modern shipping containers begin as rolls of Corten steel — an alloy designed to form a protective rust patina while resisting structural corrosion. Sheets are cut, corrugated for strength, and welded into panels.
Floors use marine-grade plywood mounted on steel cross members, treated to handle moisture and heavy loads. Corner castings and door hardware are standardized so any container fits any crane, ship, and chassis worldwide.
New units undergo ISO certification for international freight. Used containers retired from ocean service retain their structural integrity and are repurposed for storage — extending the life of existing steel rather than manufacturing anew.
That sustainability story is central to Eveon's mission: every used container sold keeps roughly 8,000 pounds of steel in productive use.
